First Steps
So you’ve had a dream. What do you do first on your journey to understanding?
You awoke remembering your dream. You’ve got all down from start to finish, at least for now. But what are some first steps you can take to understand your dream?
Dreams are elusive if they’re anything, and if you don’t make a voice recording of the detail of your dream, or at least jot down the main points of the dream it will slip through your fingers and leave you scratching your head for a hint of what happened.
Dreams are short stories written in disappearing ink. It is true that we have all had dreams that we remember the details of and have never written one word of it down. These dreams are incredibly important and often hold the answers to some of your life’s greatest mysteries, but most of us have something like four dreams a night and nearly all of them slip through our fingers if we don’t immediately write them down the instance we wake up.
Making a record of what you dreamed is one of the first steps to understanding your dreams, even if you remember it. No matter how great or life changing your dream is you cannot understand it if you can’t remember it.
Context is so important to the meaning of the dream that even if you accurately take into account the dreamer and their feelings toward different symbols, the meaning of the dream can still be elusive.
The next of the first steps is to understanding your dream is to take note of a few details. First, was it daytime or nighttime in your dream? This seemingly minor detail will help determine if your dream is positive or negative. And that will literally help you define the meaning of the symbols you see in your dream.
…with practice and a bit of finesse you can know the meaning…
of your dream
The last, and perhaps the most important of the first steps, is to keep track of the emotions you experienced in the dream. The reason emotions are important is because the context of the dream can be changed depending on the emotions of the dreamer.
For example, experiencing fear while being chased is very common in the dream world. If a dreamer does not experience fear while being chased by, say, a serial kille down a dark alley, this is a very important detail that has great impact on the meaning of the dream.
Dreams are incredibly subjective. That being said, there is a right and true meaning to your dream. It’s a bit of a paradox, but with practice and a bit of finesse you can know the meaning of your dream symbols and, ultimately, the meaning of your dream.
If you take these first steps of writing your dream down, jotting down the details of where and when your dream happens (day or night), and take note of your emotions you’re well on your way to understanding your dream.
